Banyuwangi is widely recognized for its diverse and captivating tourist attractions. From breathtaking natural landscapes, pristine beaches, and religious sites to historical landmarks, this region offers an array of destinations waiting to be explored. With the guidance of experienced local guides, your journey in Banyuwangi will be even more memorable and enriching.

The Hidden Charm of Telunjuk Raung Waterfall

One of Banyuwangi’s lesser-known yet mesmerizing natural wonders is Telunjuk Raung Waterfall. This spectacular waterfall remains a hidden gem, with only a few people having discovered its serene beauty. What makes this waterfall truly unique is the presence of a mysterious cave beneath it. To this day, the depth of the cave remains unknown, adding an air of intrigue to this already fascinating destination.

The crystal-clear water at Telunjuk Raung Waterfall is incredibly refreshing. With a moderate water flow, visitors can comfortably approach the falls, swim in the cool waters, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Beyond its tranquil waters, the lush greenery surrounding the waterfall enhances the scenic beauty of this location. Towering trees provide ample shade, making the environment even more relaxing for visitors seeking an escape into nature.

The Story Behind Telunjuk Raung Waterfall

The name Telunjuk Raung originates from its alignment with Mount Raung, a mountain that serves as a primary water source for the region. According to local folklore, Mount Raung has five significant water sources, one of which forms this enchanting waterfall. The steady, vertical flow of water resembles an outstretched index finger, hence the name Telunjuk Raung (Raung’s Index Finger).

Exploring this waterfall is both thrilling and exhilarating. However, visitors should remain cautious and stay within designated areas to avoid getting lost or being swept away by the current.

Location and Accessibility

Telunjuk Raung Waterfall is situated in Dusun Mangaran, Sumberarum Village, Songgon District, Banyuwangi, approximately 40 kilometers from Banyuwangi city center. The journey takes about 1.5 hours by motorized vehicle.

The access road leading to the site is mainly composed of dirt and rocks but is still navigable for both motorcycles and cars. Visitors will pass by the Mount Raung monitoring post before continuing through expansive sugar cane plantations.

Upon arriving at the parking area, the journey continues on foot. The trekking path is relatively easy and surrounded by untouched nature, making the experience enjoyable rather than exhausting. Unlike Lider Waterfall, which requires multiple river crossings, the path to Telunjuk Raung Waterfall is considered safer. However, the terrain still demands considerable energy, especially during the return journey, as the trail slopes sharply upwards.

During the trek, visitors will encounter small rice fields and lush watercress plantations cultivated by locals. Additionally, a natural pool formed by a small river with a mini waterfall about half a meter high offers another picturesque spot to relax and swim. The clear, bluish water of the stream is incredibly tempting for a refreshing dip.

As you continue the journey, you will eventually reach the magnificent Telunjuk Raung Waterfall. Although visitors can approach the waterfall closely, caution is necessary due to the slippery rocks and moderately strong currents.

Entrance Fees and Facilities

One of the best things about visiting Telunjuk Raung Waterfall is that there is no entrance fee. Visitors only need to pay for parking, which is Rp 5,000 for cars and Rp 2,000 for motorcycles.

Although still relatively new as a tourist destination, the local community has started developing basic facilities to enhance visitors’ experience. The available facilities include:

  • A spacious parking area
  • Small food stalls selling snacks and drinks
  • Scenic resting spots along the trail

Unfortunately, public toilets are not yet available, so visitors may need to use local residents’ facilities if necessary.

Exciting Activities to Enjoy at Telunjuk Raung Waterfall

1. Enjoying the Refreshing Waterfall

The moderate water flow at Telunjuk Raung Waterfall allows visitors to get close to the cascading water and immerse themselves in its freshness. The natural pool beneath the falls is not too deep, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing swim.

Taking a dip in the cool, crystal-clear water offers a rejuvenating experience, washing away stress and fatigue from daily life. By the time you leave, you will feel revitalized, ready to take on life’s challenges once again.

2. Capturing Stunning Photographs

Photography enthusiasts will find Telunjuk Raung Waterfall to be an absolute paradise. The journey to the waterfall itself is filled with scenic landscapes, from towering trees and sprawling rice fields to a majestic banyan tree standing in the middle of the trail.

Take your time walking along the path, soaking in the beauty, and capturing incredible shots of the untouched wilderness. Upon reaching the waterfall, visitors can take stunning photos with the 40-meter-high cascade as a breathtaking backdrop.

However, be cautious when handling your camera near the waterfall to prevent accidental slips into the water.

Important Tips Before Visiting

If you plan to explore Telunjuk Raung Waterfall, consider the following recommendations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

  1. Choose the Right Vehicle: Since the access road is quite rough, using a jeep, trooper, or motorcycle is recommended. Alternatively, you can rent a vehicle from the Rumah Pinus Songgon area.
  2. Bring Your Own Supplies: It’s advisable to carry food and drinking water from home. Also, bring a trash bag to dispose of waste responsibly.
  3. Pack Extra Clothes: If you plan to swim, bring a change of clothes to keep yourself comfortable after getting wet.
  4. Respect Nature: Help preserve the beauty of this location by keeping the area clean, from the parking lot to the waterfall itself.
  5. Capture the Moments: Bring a camera or smartphone to document your adventure.
  6. Start Early: Depart early in the morning to maximize your time and avoid traveling through the forest after dark.
