Ijen Crater is one of the most famous natural tourist destinations in Indonesia, located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency, East Java. This crater is part of the Mount Ijen complex which has a height of around 2,386 meters above sea level.

Attractions of Ijen Crater

One of the main attractions of Ijen Crater is the Blue Fire phenomenon which can only be found in two places in the world, namely in Ijen Crater and in Iceland. This phenomenon occurs due to sulfur gas coming out of the cracks in the rocks and burning at high temperatures, producing a blue flame that can only be seen at night.

In addition to Blue Fire, Ijen Crater also has a crater lake with very beautiful turquoise water. This lake is the largest acid lake in the world, with a very high acidity level. The beauty of this lake combined with the stunning mountain views, makes it a favorite destination for climbers and photographers.

Climbing to Ijen Crater

To reach the peak of Ijen Crater, visitors must climb approximately 3 kilometers from the Paltuding post. This climb takes about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the physical condition of the climber. The climbing route is quite challenging because it has a fairly steep slope, but the natural beauty along the way will make the fatigue feel paid off.

Activities at Ijen Crater

  1. Enjoying the Blue Fire – Visitors usually start climbing at midnight so they can witness the beauty of the blue fire that only appears before sunrise.
  2. Exploring the Crater Lake – Although swimming is not allowed, visitors can enjoy the panorama of the lake from the edge of the crater.
  3. Witnessing Sulfur Miners – In Ijen Crater, there are sulfur mining activities that are still carried out traditionally. The miners carry chunks of sulfur from the bottom of the crater with loads that can reach tens of kilograms.
  4. Nature Photography – Ijen Crater offers many interesting spots for photography, from the mountain landscape to the activities of sulfur miners.

Tips for Visiting Ijen Crater

  1. Wear a gas mask because the fairly thick sulfur gas can be dangerous for breathing.
  2. Wear warm clothes because the temperature at the top can be very cold, especially in the early hours of the morning.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes for climbing, because the path is quite steep and rocky.
  4. Bring a flashlight or headlamp if you want to witness the Blue Fire at night.

Ijen Crater is a tourist destination that offers extraordinary natural beauty and unique phenomena that are rarely found elsewhere. With thorough preparation, the experience of climbing and witnessing the Blue Fire at Ijen Crater will be an unforgettable moment for tourists. If you are looking for an amazing nature adventure in Indonesia, Ijen Crater is the perfect choice!
