Banyuwangi not only offers captivating natural landscapes such as exotic beaches and charming mountains, but also holds historical and cultural heritage that should be preserved. One of the best ways to access these values is by visiting museums spread across various points of this city.

Museum tourism provides a different experience. Not just recreation, but also a means of in-depth education. In Banyuwangi, you can find four main museums, each of which offers its own uniqueness in terms of collection and atmosphere.

The Blambangan Museum, located in the heart of the city, is a historical place that has been established for more than four decades. This museum is a place to preserve ancient objects from the Blambangan Kingdom, the last kingdom on the eastern tip of Java Island that once fought against VOC colonialism.

More than 4,300 collections are in the Blambangan Museum, ranging from royal artifacts, traditional musical instruments, traditional clothing, to ancient household equipment that show the lifestyle of the Osing people in ancient times. This museum is often a research location for academics of history and culture.

On the other side of the city, you will find PIGGI (Geological Information Center for Geopark Ijen), a learning center about the natural wealth of the Ijen area. The building consists of five floors with various thematic exhibition rooms that explain geological phenomena from a scientific and visual perspective.

PIGGI not only educates visitors about volcanology and geology, but also presents knowledge about the biodiversity around the Ijen area. This information is conveyed through interactive exhibitions and digital displays that are easy for children to adults to understand.

Then, there is Omahseum which is different from most museums. Built by local history lovers, this museum carries the concept of a traditional Banyuwangi house which makes the atmosphere of the visit feel intimate and relaxed. The location is in Glagah, an area that still has a strong Osing traditional feel.

At Omahseum, you can find ancient manuscripts, photographs documenting the past, and various personal objects left behind by the ancestors of the Banyuwangi community. This museum is also often used as a meeting place for cultural communities, historical discussions, and joint learning activities.

Finally, the Geopark Information Center or GIC is an important complement to this series of educational tours. This museum functions as a center for geospatial information and conservation. With a modern exhibition display, GIC introduces visitors to the process of the formation of the Banyuwangi area from a geological and environmental perspective.

In addition to the permanent gallery, GIC also holds training for students and teachers related to geotourism and ecology. This makes the museum not only a place to see inanimate objects, but also a dynamic space for the growth of new locally-based knowledge.

The presence of these four museums marks Banyuwangi’s seriousness in preserving history while improving the quality of education-based tourism. Not only for local residents, but also for domestic and foreign tourists.

These museums are perfect for visiting with family, groups of students, and even solo tourists who want to find a different holiday experience. Each museum takes you on a journey of the past and a reflection on a more culturally and environmentally conscious future.

Visiting a museum is no longer just an old-school activity. Now, educational tourism like this is a positive trend because it presents deeper values than just ordinary entertainment. Banyuwangi has succeeded in making museums a destination worth considering on your travel list.

So, if you are planning a trip to Banyuwangi, make sure these four museums are on your must-visit list. Not only does it broaden your horizons, this visit also adds meaning to your adventure along the eastern tip of Java Island.
